The University of Bergen (UiB) is a young, modern university with about 14 000 students and 3,400 faculty and staff, making it a medium sized European University. The University is engaged in the European Union's Framework programmes for research and technological development and has been designated as a European Research Infrastructure and a Research Training Site in several scientific fields. The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (MOF) of the University of Bergen consists of 5 departments and has about 1800 students. The Departments: Biomedicine, Clinical Medicine, Clinical Science, Clinical Dentistry and Global Public Health and Primary Care. Research Schools in Translational Cancer Research, Inflammation, Clinical Medical Research, Public Health and Primary Health Care, Integrated Neuroscience and Molecular and Computational Biology offer intensive PhD-courses with invited top lecturers, seminar series and discussions. The faculty’s strategies include focused translational research to generate new knowledge and best practice for clinical studies and trials and the development of methodological platforms. The department of Clinical Science, University of Bergen aims to conduct research, guidance and teaching at a high international level in order to achieve the Faculty's vision "new knowledge for better health". The department has important tasks in the training of new doctors, master degree programs, and PhD education within medicine and pharmacy.



Staff Expertise
  • Prof Emmet McCormack PhD is head of the Translational Molecular Imaging in Cancer group : Supervision of PhD candidates (10%)
  • Prof Line Bjørge M.D. Ph.D: Supervision of PhD candidates (10%)
  • Dr. Mihaela Popa D.V.M is the staff veterinarian and responsible for development of orthotopic models of numerous cancers including ovarian (Helland 2014). Mihaela will train candidates in the necessary veterinary surgical skills (10%)
  • Mireia Moyoral Saffont B.Sc: Mireia is supervising technician over our preclinical optical imaging and will provide training for PhD candidates (10%)
  • Zina Fandalyuk M.Sc: Zina will provide training in immune cell isolation and flow cytometry

Key facilities and infrastructure
  • MOF hosts several national platforms including Laboratory Animal Facility, Bioinformatics, Flowcytometry, Microarray, Molecular Imaging, Proteomics, Metabolomics and Human Biobanks.

Previous involvement in Research and Training Programmes
  • On a national level Prof. McCormack has previously been a coordinator in the “National research school in medical imaging” (MEDIM) funded by the research council of Norway, and
  • Prof. McCormack has particpated in numerous research council of Norway projects.

Current Involvement in Research and Training Programmes
  • UiB is currently involved in 105 FP7 projects, 36 of which it coordinates, among them UiB hosts 7 ERC Advanced Grants and 1 ERC Starting Grant and 1 ERC Synergy Grant. In addition, UiB also hosts 3 National Centers of Excellence awarded by the Research Council of Norway in 2012 - Centre for Intervention Science in Maternal and Child Health, Centre for Cancer Biomarkers and Birkeland Centre for Space Science. In 2014, the Research Council of Norway awarded funds to UiB for the development of infrastructures that include Health Registries for Research, Remotely Operated Vehicles for Deep Marine Research, Earth Surface Sediment Laboratory and the Norwegian Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Platform.
  • MOF is involved in 23 EU projects, 6 of which it coordinates in the programs Health (3) and MC-IEF (2) and 1 ERC Advanced Grant. MOF hosts the National Centers of Excellence: Centre for Intervention Science in Maternal and Child Health and Centre for Cancer Biomarkers.
