Maastricht University is an internationally-oriented university which is based in Europe but focuses on the world. It is a stimulating environment where research and teaching are complementary; where innovation is our focus and where talent can flourish. In the near future, education and research at Maastricht University will concentrate on three main angles of approach: Life Sciences, Innovation and Governance. Students and staff will study these socially relevant topics in an international context, with an emphasis on the European perspective. The faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciencess consists of 6 schools, encompassing Public Health & Primary Care, Cardiovascular Diseases, Oncology & Dvelopmental Biology, Mental Health & Neuroscience,Nutrition & Translational Research in metabolism and Health Professions Eduction. Based at the Health Campus is the recently founded Maastricht MultiModal Molecular Imaging Institure (M4I). Within this institute, the group of Prof Heeren comprises a specialist biomolecular imaging group which provides a unique, state-of-the-art infrastructure for atomic and molecular imaging of surfaces.


Staff Expertise
  • Prof. Ron Heerenā€˜s group is currently one of the world leaders in high resolution molecular imaging of biological surfaces. This leading position has been realized through a concerted research effort on three topics
    (a) the fundamental physics of desorption and ionization of large biomolecules
    (b) the development of innovative instruments and methods for the generation of ultrahigh resolution molecular images and
    (c) the development and application of mass spectrometry based molecular imaging to molecular histology for nanomedicine and biomedical research.

  • The mass spectrometry based molecular tissue imaging facility at MAAS is equipped with a 9.4T MALDI/ESI Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance imaging mass spectrometer
  • 7T LTQ-FTICR system for atmospheric ionisation and imaging
  • Bruker Ultraflex III ToF/ToF MALDI molecular imager
  • Physical Electronics TRIFT II high resolution secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) ToF-MS system
  • The TRIFT II based MAAS mass microscope for direct ion imaging with MALDI and SIMS
  • Waters MALDI Synapt HDMS system for conformational molecular imaging.
